Beijing Show 2012 Highlights: Audi A6 e-Tron Concept

The Audi A6 L e-tron concept has been given its debut at today's Beijing motor show. The technology study shows a plug-in hybrid version of the Chinese-market long wheelbase Audi A6, which is able to travel up to 49 miles on electric power alone.

Audi says the A6 L e-tron is a parallel hybrid which mates a 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engine, developing 208bhp with an electric motor with peak power rated at 95bhp. In electric mode, it can travel at up to 37mph.

Audi refers to the plug-in hybrid technology showcased today as the next step in its e-tron programme. The programme started with full hybrid versions of the Q3, A6 and A8. The next step will be extended range electric vehicles and finally full electric models powered by batteries or fuel cells.

Styling of the standard A6 has been tweaked. The concept has a single frame grille and partially covered intakes. It is fitted with 21-inch wheels and carries a bespoke rear diffuser.

The A6 L e-tron is fitted with MMI navigation-plus, which has been modified to recognise 29,000 Chinese characters.

The A6 L, on which the concept is based, is described as its most successful premium automobile and Audi's bestselling model in China. Audi produces this business sedan at the Changchun plant in a joint venture with FAW.
